• Modern HIV testing is fast, highly accurate, and non-invasive. All HIV tests look for markers related to the virus in your blood or body fluids. The type of test determines the "window period"—the time between when a person gets HIV and when a test can accurately detect it.

Here are the three main types of tests and what they look for:

1. Antibody Tests ( widely used)
   • What they detect: These tests look for antibodies your body makes in response to the HIV infection.
   • Where they are used:  Most rapid finger-prick and self-tests are antibody tests.

             2.   Antigen/Antibody Tests: ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay)

• What they detect: These tests are considered the gold standard. They look for both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen (a viral protein present very early in infection).
•  These lab-based tests are more advanced and are used as both screening and confirmatory tests
• This allows for earlier detection, with a window period of about 18 to 21 days.
• Benefit: By detecting the p24 antigen, these tests significantly reduce the window period, allowing for detection much sooner after exposure than antibody-only tests.
